Law Matters—Less Than We Thought

چکیده
Abstract In a pre-registered 2 × factorial between-subject randomized lab experiment with 61 federal judges, we test if the law influences judicial decisions, it does so more under rule than standard, and how its influence compares to that of legally irrelevant sympathies. Participating judges received realistic materials relatively long period time (50 min) decide an auto accident case. We find at best weak evidence matters or rules constrain standards, no sympathy effect. (JEL K00, K13, K40, K41)

More ties than we thought
We extend the existing enumeration of neck tie knots to include tie knots with a textured front, tied with the narrow end of a tie. These tie knots have gained popularity in recent years, based on reconstructions of a costume detail from The Matrix Reloaded, and are explicitly ruled out in the enumeration by Fink and Mao (2000). We show that the relaxed tie knot description language that compre...
متن کاملPhosphoinositides: Older Than We First Thought?
Despite nearly 50 years of study, it is good to see that phosphoinositides are still capable of springing the odd surprise. Signaling by the second messenger phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-trisphosphate (PtdIns(3,4,5)P(3)) was thought to be absent in yeast, but a recent paper now describes the presence of PtdIns(3,4,5)P(3) in Schizosaccharomyces pombe.
متن کاملImmunodeficiency - “ Much More Common Than We Thought ”
10 years with the development of new genetic techniques more than 100 mutations in various genes were found to be associated with primary immunodeficiencies entities. It should be noted that in some diseases several hundreds of patients were found, while in others only few children were discovered, thus applying that we are dealing with rare situations. Using the same genetic techniques a new c...
متن کاملTotal Order Planning is More Efficient than we Thought
In this paper, we present VVPLAN, a planner based on a classical state space search algorithm. The language used for domain and problem representation is ADL (Pednault 1989). We have compared VVPLAN to UCPOP (Penberthy and Weld 1992)(Weld 1994), a planner that admits the same representation language. Our experiments prove that such an algorithm is often more efficient than a planner based on a ...
